Our Couta family has suffered a huge loss with the passing on 25th August of Bill Comerford – truly a Couta legend and someone who has had a massive impact on our club over many years. It is impossible to fully understand all of Bill’s accomplishments and achievements but they include:
- Life membership of QFNC, along with his wife Peg.
- QFNC Secretary for six years from 1995 – 2000. Bill took on the role of Secretary at a time when the club was struggling badly, on and off the field. He played a major role in turning the club around and building it back up to the position of strength it is today.
- Unwavering support for our junior footballers and netballers. Bill attended many of our junior games and was a much-loved influence for our young players over a long period of time. The Comerford Award, named after Bill & Peg, is presented each year to a junior footballer and netballer “who embody the spirit of their club and their sport”.
- Driving force with Peg in the organisation (and cooking!) of Thursday night meals for players in “the old rooms”. Bill and Peg for many years were also the caterers of the half time refreshments (often with home cooked treats) at the President’s function.
- Awarded Order of Australia Medal (OAM) in the 2011 Australia Day awards for contribution to the Queenscliff community and in particular its sporting organisations.
- Instrumental role on the Queenscliff Community Sports Club and the redevelopment of the Monahan Centre and the Queenscliff sports precinct.
There are many, many other examples of Bill’s contribution to the Coutas but mostly he will be remembered as a friendly face, always there at training and game days, always prepared to lend a hand and always with an encouraging word and a positive attitude.
